Pickett Butte is an active fire lookout and will be staffed by Forest Service personnel during daylight hours for situations critical to the district. Amenities: The 12' x 12' one-room lookout is furnished with a single bed, and a small table and chair, and is equipped with a propane heater, lanterns, cooking stove with oven and a refrigerator (propane is provided).

Pickett Butte Lookout sits on a 40 foot tower. The railing around the structure is only three feet high; extreme caution should be taken at all times. The lookout has a heavy metal door that opens onto the catwalk. Please use caution when opening and closing this door, and keep the door closed while in the lookout. Watch children closely at all.

Description. Located in Southwest Oregon on the Umpqua National Forest, Pickett Butte Lookout is a classic 14' x 14' L-4 on a 41' timber tower. Carefully restored for the cabin rental program, it has remained in active service in the summer, while being available for rental in the non-fire season (the long wet winters).

On the drive down off the butte we passed Lori, the lookout we'd met at Acker Rock the day before. Pickett Butte is always staffed starting about mid-July, but due to the high fire danger she was being sent up to our lookout for the day to keep any eye on the area. Good thing we hadn't planned on hanging out up there during the day!

The Rogue-Umpqua Divide, south and east of Pickett Butte, has scenic peak landmarks, which are capped with snow until early summer. Mattress is surprisingly comfortable, fridge and oven/stove work very well. We only had phone reception when in the tower. Phone Carrier: T-Mobile.
